Rainwater harvesting is the collection, storage, and use of this water. It is used to provide drinking water, water for livestock, landscape irrigation or to refill aquifers in a process called groundwater recharge. Rainwater collected from the roofs of houses, tents, and local institutions can make an important contribution to the availability of drinking water. In some regions, rainwater harvesting is also called Stormwater harvesting. In some cases, rainwater may be the only available, or economical, water source. Rainwater harvesting systems can be simple to construct from inexpensive local materials and are potentially successful in most habitable locations. Roof rainwater can be of good quality and may not require treatment before consumption for irrigation. Although some rooftop materials may produce rainwater that is harmful to human health, it can be useful in flushing toilets, washing clothes, watering the garden, and washing.

Pakistan is facing one of the worst water shortages in its history. Due to population growth, natural disasters, and population concentration in developed cities, the provision of safe water is an insurmountable task. However, Pakistan is not in a hopeless state because it is not a “Water Scarce” Country, it’s a “Water Stressed” Country. According to research, every year Pakistan continues to waste Ten Trillion gallons of water due to a lack of poor water conservation. However, in order to conserve some of this water, there is an alternative solution. Harvesting fresh water that comes with rain.

Harvested rainwater can provide an alternative source of water for facilities. Alternative waters are sustainable sources of water, not surface or groundwater. Rainwater harvesting captures, diverts, and stores rainwater from rooftops for later use. Typical uses of rainwater include landscape irrigation, wash applications, ornamental pond, fountain filling, cooling tower make-up water, and toilet and urinal flushing. With additional filtration and disinfection, harvested rainwater can also be treated to potable standards to supplement potable water supplies to facilities.
